Birdwatchers love the waterfowl available in the Little Cities (of the Forest) microregion. A 1/2 mile handicapped accessible trail fashioned from the old Columbus & Hocking Valley Railroad bed takes visitors to a viewing area of this impressive wetland, located off St. Rt. 278 near the village of Carbon Hill. The trail is named in honor of naturalist Ora E. Anderson and features interpretive signage with poetry from Anderson and watercolors of birds.
After a morning of bird watching, a picturesque setting awaits you and your picnic lunch at the nearby Sand Run Picnic Area. Accessible rest rooms are available at the site, but no running water. A small lake provides the opportunity for a little fishing as well. Both sites are operated by the Wayne National Forest (1-740-0101).
