Shawnee is the best standing example of a boom coal town in Ohio, and perhaps the eastern U.S. Some days, Main Street has a distinct ghost town feeling, but don’t be tricked, the library is open M,W,F & S; the Shawnee Village Restaurant (Tues-Sunday); Hannah Bros. Furniture, family operated since 1927; the Community Exchange Gift Shop (afternoons Tues-Sunday, April-Dec.); Little Cities Saturdays (guess which day they are open June-Dec.?); and the Little Cities Council office (Mon-Thurs, March-Dec.); all prepared to greet guests. Two opera houses (awaiting restoration), unique second story porches, Victorian era architecture, and Elaine’s Garden, located behind a preserved storefront, all provide great photography opportunities and a sense of what it must have been like during the boom era (1870-1925).
A call to historian and vintage mining tool collector Jack Shuttleworth (740-762-2377) will get you a personal or group tour of the Shawnee Coal Mining Museum, located in a garage across the highway from downtown. You won’t regret it! |
