If history is your passion, a great place to visit is a series of sites operated by the New Straitsville History Group. Visitors are welcome to their outstanding monthly potluck on the second Thursday @ noon, held in Dunkle Hall at the entrance to Robinson’s Cave, the unofficial birthplace of the United Mine Workers. Robinson’s Cave is visitable during daylight with interpretive signage along the steps to the cave located on the hill above Main Street. Call ahead for appointment to visit the New Straitsville Museum, located in front of the cave at 200 W. Main Street (740-394-1014 or 740-394-3011). Don’t miss the heritage mural on the museum’s exterior which features the town rich story of union organizing, underground mine fires, brick making, oil drilling and bootlegging.
Nearby, on SR78 West, is Essex Doser, an Acid Mine Drainage clean up site operated by the Monday Creek Restoration Project. Visit their office in New Straitsville or call 740-394-2047 for info. |
